Lost One – Story of a Champion

If you are a hip-hop fan, most probably have heard Jay-Z’s ‘Lost one’ . For those who have never heard the song, just google it. I decided to write a bit about the song. The song is a 2006 release and can be described as a ‘deep’ song according to me. I am just trying to derive some lessons from the song’s lyrics. The Song talks about Jay-Z’s former business partners, his girlfriend then(now wife, thought they had broken up when the song was released), and his nephew who had died in a road accident sometime back. So to the lessons

1.

“I put friends over business end of the day though
But when friends, business interests as they go
Ain’t nothing left to say though
I guess we forgot what we came fo’ “

We have all heard that business and friendship doesn’t go together. In the song, Jay chides his former business partners who had been his friends for claiming that they had made him. Now the friends went everywhere claiming that he wouldn’t be who he was if not for them. This also happens to us so many times where a friend or a close person who probably left you while you were beginning something comes back to claim the fame when you have been successful. While you were beginning your journey, it seemed like hard work, and dirt and they were happy to stay out of your way, then you hit the jackpot and they want to share it with you. Beware.

2.

“And I ain’t even know how it came to this
Except that fame is
The worst drug known to man
It’s stronger than, heroin
When you could look in the mirror like, “There I am”
And still not see, what you’ve become
I know I’m guilty of it too but, not like them”

Fame is the worst drug known to man. I don’t completely agree of course and I have never been famous to know, but Jay-Z would know. What I know is that fame and money, if they come to you while you weren’t expecting, or you were not grounded enough, will destroy you.

3.

“Lose one, let go to get one
Left one, lose some to win some (You lost one)
Story of a champion, sorry I’m a champion
You lost one”

This is the chorus part. You will loose some, you will get some. Doesn’t matter, you will still be a champion. You will loose close friends, you will get others but you will still be a CHAMPION.

4.

“I don’t think it’s meant to be…

So I have to give her
Free, time, even if it hurts
So breathe, mami, it’s deserved
You’ve been put on this earth to be
All you can be, like the reserves

So I have to allow she, her, time to serve
The time’s now for her”

Yeah, that is called letting go. Sometimes you just have to let go and to not hold on tightly to what seems not to be working. The chic thinks other things/people are more important than you, well it is Ok. You can move on and in moving on wish her well. And as the well known story goes, they are now Man and Wife.

Also remember you and me have been put on this earth to be all we can be.

Remember You loose some, you win some but You are still a champion.
